Certified Public Accountant Requirements
In order to become a Certified Public Accountant, you must achieve certain requirements. The Certified Public Accountant Requirements are largely state-mandated, so be sure to thoroughly research your state requirements before starting the process, so as to be meticulous in working toward the right things. Even though it is state-mandated, most of the requirements are similar and can be generalized for the most part. There are 4 “E”s that must be met in order to apply for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant.
Education
150 credit or semester hours must be met to apply for a CPA license. Some of these hours must be in accounting or business and that is one of the state issued Certified Public Accountant requirements. There are some states (only a handful) that will allow licensure with only 130 semester hours.
Experience
Most states require 1-2 years of relevant experience as one of the Certified Public Accountant Requirements. Many people that take the CPA exam have already worked in the industry for a number of years and are choosing to go back and get their CPA license. Be sure to submit your work experience to be sure that the employer, position, and line of work will qualify as one of the Certified Public Accountant Requirements.
Exam
The CPA exam is the hairiest of all the Certified Public Accountant requirements and in most cases, takes over your life for up to 18 months of time. The CPA exam is broken into 4 categories, and each category must be passed within an 18 month window, and each must be passed with a 75 or greater. The pass rate is less than 50% for each exam and less than 3% of all CPA candidates take and pass each of the 4 exams on their first attempt.
Ethics Exam
An ethics exam is the last of the 4 Certified Public Accountant requirements to be met and is done online. In comparison to the CPA exam, it is much easier and has a higher pass rate.
